Janice Johnson, a native of Buckingham County, Virginia, retired from the United States Army as an Adjutant General and Civil Affairs Officer after 32 years of military service. She began her military career as an enlisted medic in the Virginia Army National Guard , and later joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Longwood College. She was commissioned into the Adjutant Generals Corps as a reserve officer and graduated from Longwood College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She alsoearned a Juris Doctorate from New College of California School of Law, and Masters Degrees in Education Administration and Supervision from Virginia State University and in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College.
COL Johnson served in a variety of military assignments, retiring as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel(G1) at the United States Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command, (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Her expertise allowed her to have represented the United States Army as a subject matter expert in Human Resource Management in the countries of Albania, Nigeria and Montenegro, serve as the senior military producer for the $200 million dollar "Army Strong" television advertising campaign, was one of the most significant Army recruiting initiatives in history, conduct initial Inspector's General inquiries in support of the Abu Gharib Special Assessment of Detainee Operations, serve as the principal Equal Opportunity Advisor to the Chief of the United States Army Reserve and serve as an Army Reserve liaison to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services.
A partial list of Colonel Johnson’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Non Article 5 NATO Medal, the Army Meritorious Service Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters; the Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the German Armed Forces Troop Proficiency Gold Badge, the Army Parachute Badge, the Army Air Assault Badge, the Army Staff Identification Badge, Chilean and Canadian foreign Paratrooper Badges, the Horatio Gates Bronze Medal for distinguished career service in the Adjutant General’s Corps and the Superior Civilian Service Award.
After retiring from the Army, Ms. Johnson deployed to Camp Eggers, Kabul, Afghanistan as a defense contractor advising the Inspector General for the Afghan National Police (Zone 101) in conducting inspections and investigations. She transitioned from that job to a Department of Defense senior civilian position as the Senior Advisor to the Afghan Assistant Minister of Defense for Reserve Affairs with responsibility for guiding the continuing reinforcement and implementation of an effective Afghan National Army Reserve Force.
Ms. Johnson is currently employed by the Department of Defense and is a volunteer member of numerous charitable and nonprofit organizations.
